Frequently asked questions
You need to consider the following aspects:
Credentials and Experience
Look for coaches who are accredited by reputable organisations like the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Accreditation means they’ve met rigorous standards and adhere to a professional code of ethics.
Compatibility and Rapport
Coaching is a deeply personal process. You need to feel comfortable and safe with your coach. Many coaches offer a free initial consultation. Use this opportunity to see if you connect well. Trust your instincts here – if it doesn’t feel right, keep looking.
Practical Considerations
What is the coach's technology setup? Are their session times flexible? Do they offer in-person sessions if you prefer? Also, consider the cost and whether it fits your budget.
Clear Goals and Outcomes
A good coach will help you set clear, measurable goals. Before you start, think about what you want to achieve. Whether it’s improving leadership skills, managing stress, or finding work-life balance, your coach should tailor their approach to your objectives. Coaching is not the same as therapy! You want someone who can hold you accountable as well as cheer you on.
In short, yes. Coaching is still unregulated which means anyone can set up shop and call themselves a coach without having any backgournd, life or relevant career experience or credentials.
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) is regarded as the global gold standard because it provides a rigorous, standardized framework that separates professional business coaching from casual "advice-giving."
I am trained as a coach at University level and accredited with ICF. I bring life and international work experience in schools, business and managing staff to my work, and I genuinely love being a coach.
Every person and every organisation is unique.
Coaching is also very personal. Some clients like a structured set of sessions to address a specific goal or set of goals, while others may prefer to engage in coaching on an as-needed basis over a longer time frame, others may prefer to check in a couple of times per year as an accountability and growth tune up.
I offer everything from single sessions dealing with a specific issue such as interview preparation, intensive half-day professional development sessions, to longer term strategic partnerships.
Most schools find the greatest value in a hybrid model: an initial audit followed by a series of targeted PD sessions and ongoing executive coaching to ensure the new strategies stick.
Internal staff in schools are often stretched thin by daily operations, and we all can become blind to problems inherent in the things we are familiar with.
My expertise is built on 30 years of leading complex change and policy implementation across local, state, and international education systems. As an external expert, I provide an objective, skilled, outside perspective free from school politics. I bring cross-sector insights from my work across NSW and Australia, and can provide high-level strategy insights that internal teams often don't have the time to curate.
Most PD is a "one-off" event that is, sadly, quickly forgotten. My expertise lies in my experience of teaching and teachers, and using practical strategies from the real world. Grounded in research on the "knowledge-to-practice" gap, my programs focus on bridging the gap between educational theory and the actual reality of a busy NSW classroom.
My training and coaching moves well beyond superficial "self-care" tips. I will address the systemic drivers of teacher burnout. I have built and maintained real systems where staff feel empowered and effective, which is the ultimate driver of retention and can help you to improve and maintain staff satisfaction as well.
Absolutely! I have many years of proven success working with students who have disenagged with traditional learning. I can structure PD for your staff to learn about the why behind the behaviours, how to distinguish between what students can control and what they can't, and real approaches to build trust and improve the classroom dynamic.
I can also structure a whole school strategy which provides guidelines for senior staff and decision makers in order to support both your students AND your staff in managing learners with additional needs.
Navigating the Registration Process for NSW Schools Manual can be overwhelming. Kate provides a comprehensive gap analysis of your current documentation against the latest NESA requirements. i don't just identify what’s missing; i work alongside your leadership team to draft, refine, and implement the necessary evidence of compliance, ensuring you approach your inspection with total confidence.
Yes. I can conduct a deep-dive "health check" on your school policies and procedures. This includes reviewing your Curriculum, Student Welfare, and Governance documentation. By identifying non-compliance risks early, we allow your school to rectify issues in a low-stakes environment well before the official NESA inspectors arrive.
Mentoring is often informal and experience-based and is something that most good leaders will do for staff in many informal ways during the year. The reality is that while school leaders value supporting and developing staff, there are so many demands on time every day that often structured staff development gets pushed down the list.
In contrast, my Professional Coaching is a structured, goal-oriented partnership. Using evidence-based frameworks, research and experience, I act as a "thought partner" for school leaders, using powerful questioning to unlock solutions to complex school-based challenges, from staff conflict to strategic planning to work-life balance and sustainability.
